The premium line from any manufacturer will almost certainly cover better and last longer than its less-expensive versions. Because the expense of painting is mostly in the labor, it makes sense to buy premium paint. But suppose you plan to move or want to change the color scheme of your home in the next few years. Here’s where you can save with a midlevel paint that’s backed for 10 years or so versus 15 or more for many top-of-the-line paints.

“We find customers really don’t believe warranty claims,” says Lane Blackburn, vice president of architectural marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “But they do use the warranty as a guide to quality.” For example, Ace Hardware, like most retailers, offers two exterior-paint lines: Royal Shield ($20 to $25 per gallon, 15-year warranty) and Quality Shield ($16, 10-year warranty).

There are other ways to pick quality exterior paint out of a lineup:

Proper pigments. Quality pigments allow a good paint to cover fully with just one coat. Paints with lower-cost pigments often must be applied in several coats. That means more work, which makes buying low-quality paint a poor financial decision. The best pigment is titanium dioxide. Look for it when ingredients are listed on the can.

High percentage of solids. The solids are what’s left on the wall after the paint has dried. Anything over 45 percent is considered good; the higher the level of solids, the better, because you’ll wind up with a denser, more durable coating. For example, a gallon of Dulux Exterior Flat contains 52 percent solids by weight. However, be aware that some companies add cheap fillers to beef up the percentage of solids - that makes it wise to stay away from inexpensive paints with a high level of solids. Although you typically won’t find information about solids on the label, check with your paint retailer, ask to see product data sheets or fire up your modem and check the company’s Website.

All-acrylic binder. The binder is what holds the pigments, mildewcides and other solids that form the actual paint film. Look for latex paint with an all-acrylic binder, which is inherently more weather resistant than vinyl or vinyl-acrylic.

Many paint companies use a modified acrylic for their interior lines and all-acrylic for premium exterior paints made to endure the elements. For example, Glidden’s Spred Satin is an interior with a modified acrylic, while its Spred Dura Satin is an exterior paint with an all acrylic binder. If you don’t see “100% Acrylic” or “All Acrylic” in bold on the front of the can, check ingredients for “acrylic polymer.”

Also be sure you pick the right paint for the surface you’re covering. Most water-based exterior paints can be used on wood and hardboard siding and trim. They’re also fine for vinyl and aluminum siding, and most masonry. On stucco prone to cracking, use an elastomeric paint. It’s more flexible than standard coatings and leaves a durable film that’s twice as thick (about 5 mil). An example is the stucco paint from Valspar, which bridges hairline cracks to keep out water.

You can also buy paint tailored to conditions in specific regions of the country. Dutch Boy’s ClimateGuard line was the first of these paints from a major manufacturer. For example, its Southeast formulation has extra mildewcides for a humid climate, while Northwest paint is higher in solids to resist months of rainfall.

Choosing and matching colors can be nerve-wracking, which explains why there are so many white houses. Fortunately, paint companies are taking the pain out of this process. Many offer color cards that suggest color combinations for siding and trim. Several have also come up with other approaches.

Come into the situation with an open mind. If you do not choose your roommate and sometimes even if you do, you may find your roommate is not like you very much. You may differ in religious beliefs, political opinion, music taste, or many other characteristics. This does not mean you will not get along. Often a roommate who is very different from yourself will introduce you to new and exciting things, and offer completely different points of view to your conversations. Do not write off your roommate just because you seem to have nothing in common at first.

Be honest and clear about any problems you have with your roommate. The worst roommate situation may be when one roommate slowly grows angry at another roommate but the other roommate does not realize anything is wrong because the first roommate doesn’t say anything. At the same time you should be careful not to be nit-picky about every little thing someone does. Living with someone is one of the most difficult, yet potentially, one of the the most rewarding of interpersonal relationships. Compromise should be the key tool in working out roommate problems.

Set clear rules. There are many ground rules which should be established early in your roommate relationship. From establishing your visiting policy to establishing a rotation for who should take out the garbage, many details need to be worked out, but because you make the rules together, you should be open to changing the rules if necessary later.

Treat each other with respect. Everyone often runs on a different schedule. If you come in late one night and your roommate is sleeping, come in quietly, try to manage without the lights on. Sometimes waking up your slumbering roommate is not the best thing to do! At other times, one roommate may want to sleep or study while the other may want to watch TV or listen to music. Try to work out the best situation. Someone may have to go to a study lounge, or someone may have to try and watch their TV show in a friends room. Do what you can, within reasonable means, to be thoughtful and courteous towards your roommate.

Be willing to compromise. For example, in the area of music: one roommate wants to listen to rap, the other to country. Learn to give a little. listen to each others music for a little while and if no one wants to compromise, then you don’t listen to anything or you use earphones.

Learn to be laid back. If there is one thing you can’t do, it’s being anal with a roommate. You HAVE to learn to let some things roll off of your back. Be able to stand you ground with them, but try not stepping on their ground too much! If your roommate leaves their area of the room messy for a few days and you’re a neat freak, don’t let it get to you. Even though the temptation to throw their stuff out of the window may be overwhelming, constrain yourself. If you learn to let others deal with their own messes you’ll be better off in the end.

Don’t use their things without asking. Unless you formally agree to it, don’t take their stuff without asking. Even if it’s something little ALWAYS make sure you ask, at least when you first meet them. After you get the chance to know them better, you’ll find out what goes and what doesn’t.

If you do borrow something, return it as soon as you’re done. After the first few months, you tend to forget what belongs to who. Use separate shelves for CD’s and movies, or consider labels.

Step One
Be prepared: Create a renter’s resume with your current and previous five addresses and landlord phone numbers, your employer and length of employment, your current salary and other income, personal references, among other information. Include a copy of your credit report. You want to look as good on paper as possible to stand out from other applicants.

Step Two
Look in the newspaper classifieds, apartment hunter publications, college campus bulletin boards, and online for available units to investigate. Ask friends about openings in their buildings.

Step Three
Consider how much you can afford to pay. A good rule of thumb is no more than 30 percent of your take-home monthly income.

Step Four
Enlist a rental agent to narrow your search. Depending on the market, this service may be free (paid for by landlords) or cost you a percentage of your rent when you land the apartment.

Step Five
Turn to a roommate service if you’re looking for cheaper space to share. Be clear what qualities you desire in a roommate, as well as types of people or habits you’d prefer to avoid, such as smokers.
